History of Coffee Bay


Coffee Bay is a small coastal town in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, part of the O.R. Tambo District. Its name comes from a shipwreck that spilled coffee beans along the shore — the beans briefly germinated, leaving behind a story that still tempts coffee lovers today. Locally, it’s also known as Elliot Dale and in isiXhosa, eXhora.



 Hole in the Wall: A Natural Wonder


One of Coffee Bay’s most iconic attractions, Hole in the Wall, is a dramatic rock formation carved by the Mpako River. Beyond its geological beauty, it carries Xhosa legends of mystical sea people, adding a magical dimension to the landscape.

Things to prepare for on this trip:


  1. It is in the villages so a gravel uphill and downhill vehicle is ideal. The popular 4x4 and similar 



  2. Weather conditions may vary most of the times it is warm and the beach gives the perfect sea breeze from sunset to sunrise you just need sunscreen. However rain is also frequent in summer which leads to mud roads, grounds and wet grass even flooded rivers in some areas. It is best to have boots, rain coats, umbrellas and some warm clothes for cold days. 



  3. Safety at all times, this means there should be vigilance and avoid going alone in places rely on support from the tour guides, accommodation and transport facilities are very helpful in keeping contact and knowledgeable about the environment. 



  4. There are just minimal amenities, the place is ideal for a gateway from the city and busy crowded areas so the availability of basics is there. 



  5. Network coverage in rural areas is sometimes poor and it depends the further you go the more you will experience some cut offs online however most places that cater for tourists are usually well covered even in such areas and Wi-Fi is popular in lodges.
