Makhanda in Eastern Cape comes to a stand-still

A quiet old small town with a laid back feel during most of the year, Makhanda in Eastern Cape turns out to be a buzz in the mid-year from 26 June to 06 July 2025. It has been 50 years since this occasional event brings magic to the town, almost a true tale of Wakanda Makhanda.

Here is why: Renowned for being one of the greatest hosts of the National Arts Festival in the country. It is where art lovers meet the best performers, it's circus that brings Makhanda to life.

Well-known musicians from different genres like orchestra, jazz, afro soul, choirs, comedians, dancers, exhibitions of paintings, visual art, fashion, handmade materials and drawings, options to food, the list goes on.

It is all about the world of art in display, getting up close and personal with those who were born for the stage. Taking their hearts on stage and mingling with the lovers of their work, the artists give it their all in a two-week-long festival.

With various departments from the government showcasing their support to sponsors, the community and the media. The festival keeps on showing its great significance. The audience supports the shows in attendance and buys tickets to watch them shows.

One of the biggest organizers of the event over the years has always been Rhodes University, which is situated in the heart of Makhanda, Standard Bank and local government.

There is more than what meets the eye in this festival, it goes deep into the town that is strongly embedded in historic art, music and stage performances.

Where natural performers also give their all in training and moving around the world to come back and give their home what they were born and raised to be.

The likes of Unathi Mankayi, John Kani, The Soil trio, and many other artists from neighboring towns have graced the festival with their performances and conversations, getting closer to the people off stage.

Awards were also given to signify the importance and recognition of some of the greatest artists who, at times, go unnoticed, and unique talents are unveiled by the National Arts Festival.
