Top ten must do holiday activities for children

 Story by Anele Zikali

It is that time of the year fellow South Africans, when schoolchildren get to spend time at home. To avoid laying on the couch and TV or phone addictions.

Involving fun, relaxation and stimulation can make the holiday experience worthwhile, below is a list of activities to do:

Safety cautions must be observed and children must never be left alone.

1.Different types of painting

Sand art painting

Painting can be so much fun, as most children enjoy doing art, they get to express themselves using imagination, thoughts and understanding of things in a creative.

There are different types to explore such as sandy paper, water and visual art. You can search online for sellers or look in your local stationery shops.

2. Water/ swimming activities:

Water can be an easy way to get children going for a while, whether it’s playing with small water bombs in the backyard, swimming at the beach or swimming pool or spray guns. It is all fun in the water.

3. Picnic/ park visits

The beauty of this activity is that it can be enjoyed at very minimal costs to none. There are quite a lot of things that can be done, from eating outdoors, kicking or throwing a ball, slides and swings, driving scooters or bikes on the pavement, relaxing in nature and also there are always other children with their parents in most cases which can be good to find playmates.

4. Baking day

This is one of the top things to do, children are eager to bake. You can use a whole lot of variety to keep the busy hands entertained whilst learning. Use different shapes like heart shapes, toppings can also bring variety and vibrancy.

5. Farm visit/ gardening at home:

Some farms are open to the public for things like fruit picking and eating fresh food from their place. Some farms open up during school holidays for the little ones to explore and enjoy. This can be a quick one to also impact with exposure to farming as it is a good opportunity to learn about the industry using practical experience.

6. Local art museum/center:
Art centers are good forms of exploring hobbies and expressions. Many centres like art museums also have different types of activities that engage children and with changing exhibitions and events children can get to know their surroundings and stimulate their brains.

7. Donation day:

As Sir Thomas Brown once said, “Charity begins at home,” those magic words, are still valuable traditions practiced by families to maintain humanity and compassion. Giving their outgrown clothes, books, and old items for recycling can help declutter.
Other additional activities include family visits or friends, family events in your area like concerts that are family-friendly, sports facilities and do not forget mental and emotional stimulations like yoga for children, spa day and children’s church services and having a conducive environment at home for them.
